James “Jimmy” Carson was the brains behind the Carson-Kozak mob. A former Great Lakes sailor, Carson drifted into crime in the mid-1920s. Carson and another member of the gang once went on a one-day crime rampage in Detroit in which they killed a police officer, shot a Hamtramck detective, robbed a bank, and totaled a stolen car. Joseph “Legs” Laman, standing between two court officers, and his mob specialized in kidnapping Detroit area wiseguys, mostly wealthy gamblers. The gang was destroyed in 1929 by a task force of state and Detroit police. Many kidnappings attributed to the Purple Gang were actually done by the Laman mob. Laman later became a state witness and exposed his former partners in return for the reduction of a long prison sentence. (Courtesy of the Walter Reuther Library.)
